Smegma stones

Has your gelding or stallion had a change in behavior? Every horse owner knows there are rarely only one cause for this. However, have you checked your horse for smegma stones? What is a smegma stone? This is a natural secretion from the horse’s penis which can accumulate in a cavity of the urinary tract. If you have not had a check-up it could be worth having it done by your veterinary at your horse´s next consultation.

A showjumper pony I have treated for a while was difficult and irritable. He was angry during treatment and tried to kick me. He was also difficult in training, resisted to jump and was not at all up for training. It is really easy to think of this behavior as pony whim.

During treatment I found his neck and back joints to have several, recurrent restrictions. The muscles of his back were quite tense and his jaw also had restrictions.

After a routine visit with veterinary and dentist Berven he had several smegma stones removed. At my next treatment the whole horse loosened, his irritability was completely evaporated, and he had become a harmonious horse. At the following treatment his muscles were much softer, and the worst restrictions were gone. My most interesting finding was that the jaw was loose.
